A cold but breezy day with a good 10-15 knots from 320 degrees saw some excellent racing in the penultimate round of the series. A superb start saw Lucky Jim bang on the pin end with good boat speed and lifting away from the fleet forcing Love Shack, Hearty Harry and Sanguma to all tack away as they couldn't cope with the angle and pace of the Elan. More importantly Quokka was buried mid-line and had a lot of work to do to get clean air and a good line to the windward mark.
Excellent use of the shifts up the first beat saw us round neck and neck with Puma Logic (Reflex 38) and Incognito (First 40.7). The three of us then proceded to sail away with some excellent downwind tactics and good beating, again using the shifts very well.
With the two faster boats showing signs of perhaps saving their time on us but a good downwind call to stay right in pressure and gybe to the port lay-line into the last mark (South Ryde Middle) helped us recover some time and superb drop and rounding, followed by great use of a big lift away from the mark saw us recover all of the distance on Puma Logic and most to Incognito, the latter taking line honours with us second on the water and Puma Logic third.
As interested spectators we watched Quokka stage one of the comebacks of the series (perhaps only bettered by our own in the second race!) to finish third on corrected time!! This shifts the balance of the series firmly back into our favour with us entering the last week one point ahead of the 37 and with an extra win! Roll on next Sunday!
